112 Miles to the Pin: Extreme Golf Around the World

$17.95

For many golfers, the innocent thrill of striking a drive clearly, avoiding a deep sand-trap, or holing out an unlikely putt is all they need to make a round (or a whole year) of golf memorable. But there’s a group of modern players in search of something more. They’ve rediscovered the magic of the game in “extreme” golf, and their adventures are about to inspire golfers everywhere.  Here are players like Andre Tolme, who decided to turn Mongolia into a par 11,880 course and Torsten Schilling, who spends his weekends teeing off from the side of his boat aiming for sites back on shore. From New Zealand’s naked open to golf in Antarctica, Duncan Lennard describes a world at the very edge of the sport.

$35

In 3×3, the recent work of Seattle-based architecture firm Suyama Peterson Deguchi is broken down into a case study of three recently constructed residences. Sharing inherent architectonic characteristics and employing similar design philosophies, these homes are tested on three different kinds of sites and topographies: a remote island getaway, perched high along a rocky bluff affording “big” views of the archipelago below; a long and narrow site in an historic beach community on Puget Sound; and a site situated on a golf course fairway, surrounded by homes built in more traditional styles.

A Course of Their Own: A History of African American Golfers

A Course of Their Own: A History of African American Golfers

$15.95

Bill Spiller was forty-seven when he was forced by desperate finances to caddie at the Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles. One day Spiller was caddying for a member who became outraged by Spiller’s stories of inequities and suffering during his golfing career. The golfer urged Spiller to write California’s attorney general, who later ordered the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) to cease its discrimination. In 1961 the “Caucasian race” clause was deleted from the PGA constitution. This was an historic decision that gave black golfers the chance to compete at the highest level in the sport. Golf has long been the domain of white men. During the twentieth century, however, African American pioneers such as Lee Elder, Howard Wheeler, and Charlie Sifford broke down the barriers for black golfers who wanted to play, and win, as equals with white golfers. A Course of Their Own looks at golf from the perspectives of these men, who had courage as well as remarkable skills. It tells the stories of their struggles, their bravery, and their passion for the game and puts their lives and contributions into historical perspective.

 A Golfer's Education

A Golfer’s Education

$0.99

DARREN KILFARA HAD A SCHEME – to study abroad at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, allegedly to write a thesis on the history of golf. It was foolproof. He would enroll at the school, attend a few classes, earn a year’s worth of university credit, and thereby become eligible for a student pass to the golf courses of St. Andrews – including the Old course, arguably the most famous golf course in the world – for the low, low price of $150 for the year. A perfect plan, so of course it went awry. A Golfer’s Education is the true story of a young man, once a member of Harvard’s golf team and a former writer of Golf Digest, who began his year in St. Andrews as an intense, uptight golfer willing to do anything to play a great course and ended it a changed man and a better golfer in ways unmeasurable by a scorecard. This charming and funny book chronicles Kilfara’s year in Scotland playing the finest golf courses in the country; learning that the Scots see golf as a reflection of their democratic ideals; discovering the subcultures of Scottish golf (drunken bohemian street golf, homeless golf fanatics, betting parlors, and poetic BBC golf commentators); falling in love with a Scottish woman; and finally overcoming his obsession with scores and handicaps to love the simplicity of the game. Kilfara possesses a substantial knowledge of the game and of golf course architecture and is a perceptive, insightful guide to the great golf courses of Scotland. At the same time, he has created a timeless story of an irreverent young man, realizing his dreams in the birth-place of his sport.

You have witnessed the unbelievable and the comical. But how do your stories compare with the thirty-one found in this book? You may have a better one. And, if so, it may be worthy of an entry in Volume Two! Perhaps it reads something like this… Rules of Golf prohibit a player from assisting his opponent in locating a lost ball. Being Al s opponents for the round, Mark and I waited while Al and Joe rummaged through the forest looking for Al’s ball.We were becoming somewhat concerned when, at the seven minute mark, Joe emerged from the woods. He walked out alone and he was smiling. Mark and I looked at each other in disbelief. Was there something red dripping from the head of Joe s 3-iron? How would we explain that the boss went missing playing golf? What did Joe do with his body and how were we going to protect our friend?

Bankruptcy of Wade Elliot’s home building company was traumatic for him but a blessing in disguise. His Atlanta attorney introduced Wade to Molly Forrest, a socialite divorcee, who owned Forrest Glen, a large home place in Winston-Salem that abutted the palatial home of R. J. Reynolds, founder of Reynolds Tobacco Company. It was part of Molly’s recent divorce settlement, and she needed a competent builder to evaluate its potential as her permanent residence. Now without a source of income, Wade consented and traveled with Molly to inspect the home, built in 1921, believing the job would only require three days. Upon arrival, a bizarre twist of events ensued, including an assassination attempt on Molly. Equally strange was the unique relationship that developed between them. Wade fell in love with Forrest Glen, and also became Molly’s protector, mentor, inspiration and much more as their fates evolved during the next two years. Author Biography: Golf, fishing, traveling and tinkering were welcomed changes to Garland Ladd upon retiring, but fell short of satisfying creative urges. His career as a Professional Engineer offered many opportunities for creative expression; designing, building and guiding projects to completion had creative aspects, as did directing the engineering efforts of a large corporation. After a tentative stab at writing about his early life, a plot quickly evolved and Ladd was totally hooked on writing fiction. Now a passion, he has written ten suspense novels during the past six years. Seemingly never without a plot, he continues with other interests and his writing usually occurs before the rooster crows – - between three and eight AM – - and then it’soff to the golf course. Born in Danville, VA, veteran of WW II, BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech in ‘51. Ladd and his wife, the former Sara Watson, have three children and two grandchildren.

A Season in Dornoch: Golf and Life in the Scottish Highlands

$1.99

The town of Dornoch, Scotland, lies at nearly the same latitude as Juneau, Alaska. A bit too far removed for the taste of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, the Royal Dornoch Golf Club has never hosted a British Open, but that has hardly diminished its mystique or its renown. In an influential piece for The New Yorker in 1964, Herbert Warren Wind wrote, “It is the most natural course in the world. No golfer has completed his education until he has played and studied Royal Dornoch.” If any town in the world deserves to be described as “the village of golf,” it’s Dornoch. You can take the legendary links away from St. Andrews, and you’ll still have a charming and beautiful university town with great historic significance; take the links away from Dornoch and it would be as little noted or known as its neighbors Golspie, Tain, and Brora. (The town is forty miles north of Inverness, generally thought of as the northernmost outpost of civilization in Scotland.) The game has been played in Dornoch for some four hundred years. Its native son Donald Ross brought the style of the Dornoch links to America, where his legendary, classic courses include Pinehurst #2, Seminole, and Oak Hill. Lorne Rubenstein decided to spend a summer in Dornoch to clear the muddle from his golfing mind and to rediscover the natural charms of the game he loves. But in the Highlands he found far more than bracing air and challenging greens. He found a people shaped by the harshness of the land and the difficulty of drawing a living from it, and still haunted by a historic wrong inflicted on their ancestors nearly two centuries before. Rubenstein met many people of great thoughtfulness and spirit, eager to share their worldviews, their life stories, and a wee dram or two. And as he explored the empty, rugged landscape, he came to understand the ways in which the thorny, quarrelsome qualities of the game of golf reflect the values, character, and history of the people

Readers can vicariously live for a year in Eastern Europe through the eyes of an American professor working in “Absurdistan.” With a rare blend of humor and insight, Professor Wright shares a year of teaching at universities in “Absurdistan,” the name given to former Czechoslovakia by its citizens. His job was to help universities overcome the last seventy years of communist propaganda. This true story is a “tongue-in-cheek” look at the people, history, and geography of Eastern Europe. Become acquainted with Dr. Wright’s castle, village, university, and neighbors. Learn the true meaning of “Eastern European Time,” and the correct way to mime kitty litter. See if you can survive the alternately hilarious and tragic daily life. In turn funny and sad, Dr. Wright combines mordant insights into the human condition with truly touching stories of local citizens. His incisive wit takes on politics, religion, language, and history, with equal opportunity barbs. He lives in an ancient stone cottage just outside the ruins of a castle destroyed by Napoleon, in a genuine “quaint little village” with no telephone. He rides the same trolleys as the local people. He eats the same food, and shops in the same bazaars. Astoundingly, he survives a year without TV, the internet, or even a golf course. Twenty-four photos add a rare glimpse into the lives, people, and countries of Eastern Europe. The captions alone are worth the price of the book.

 Afternoons with Mr. Hogan

Afternoons with Mr. Hogan

Ben Hogan’s former ball shagger recounts firsthand stories of the golf legend—and reveals, for the first time, Hogan’s Swing Secret, a source of mystery to golfers for more than fifty years. Ben Hogan’s pro golf record is legendary. A four-time PGA Player of the Year, he celebrated sixty-three tournament wins and became known as a man of few words and fewer close friends. Most of what we know about Hogan has been based on myth and speculation. Until now. In the 1960s, though Hogan’s competitive career was over, he kept the practice habits that made him famous and remade modern competitive golf. He hired seventeen-year-old Jody Vasquez to help. Each day, after driving to a remote part of the course at Shady Oaks Country Club, Hogan would spend hours hitting balls and Vasquez would retrieve them. There, and over the course of their twenty-year friendship, Hogan taught Jody the mechanics of his famous swing and shared his thoughts on playing, practicing, and course management—unknowingly revealing much about his character, values, and beliefs, and the events that shaped them. In Afternoons with Mr. Hogan, Jody Vasquez shares dozens of stories about Hogan, from the way he practiced, selected his clubs, and interacted with other star players to his little-known humor and generosity. Combining the gentle insight of Tom Kite’s A Fairway to Heaven (which recalls Kite’s golf education under Harvey Penick) with the sage perspective of Penick’s own Little Red Book, Vasquez’s tribute is funny, poignant, and full of advice for golfers of all levels.

Afternoons with Mr. Hogan: A Boy, a Golf Legend, and the Lessons of Life

$14.99

Still reeling from the tragic death of a much-loved colleague, Detective Chief Constable Bob Skinner and his men soon discover that a disturbed serial killer is still at large and very close to home. The body of a young woman has been found on a golf course. It has been there for 10 days, and it is the middle of a steamy summer holiday; she’s not a pretty sight. But the way she has been laid out is uncannily familiar. The body has been “composed,” just like the bodies of three other young women in a previous case. Could it be the work of a copycat killer? Further investigation finds that the woman was having a relationship with the son of a Tory MP, and that her ex-boyfriend is a policeman with a reputation as a serious womanizer. Now Skinner must find the killer as fear spreads through Edinburgh, and politicians begin to raise their heads.

It seems unlikely that a place as far off the beaten track as Aiken, South Carolina, would become the preferred wintering location for the denizens of New York society. But from the late 1800s, the most recognized names in America–the Vanderbilts, the Whitneys, and even the Roosevelts–began coming to this charming Southern city to escape the cold, relax among the oaks, and play. And play they did, establishing Aiken as an international polo capital and a premier place to ride, hunt, and golf. Aiken has so much history beyond the folks known as the winter colonists. Legends of the area’s restorative powers date back to Native Americans. Aiken also boasts an amazing number of records, including the destination for the world’s longest railroad in 1833 and the second-oldest 18-hole golf course in the United States, the Palmetto Golf Club, built in 1892.

He served on the Board of Trustees of Alcoholics Anonymous from 1957-1966 and was president of the National Council on Alcoholism from 1951-1953. Harry Tiebout was raised in Brooklyn, New York. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Wesleyan College in 1917, then went to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he also completed an internship with a specialization in psychiatry. The psychiatry service at Hopkins was led by Adolph Meyer, who had an eclectic approach in which Freudian theory was contributory but not dominant. John B. Tiebout was on the staff of New York Hospital, Westchester Division from 1922-24. He then began work in child guidance clinics in New York City, joining the Institute for Child Guidance as staff psychiatrist shortly after it was founded in 1927. The Institute was a well-funded center for training and research, dominated by psychoanalysis and specializing in “exhaustive case histories 75 pages long.” During these years Tiebout was also on the staff of Cornell Medical School and the Payne Whitney Psychiatric Clinic. Alle-Kiski Sports History: A Century of Sports in the A-K Valley Region

$19.95

How did forty-seven , mostly gritty, blue-collar towns on the edges of four counties outside of Pittsburgh, produce such an unparalleled wealth of sports accomplishments?Sports journalist George Guido attempts to answer that question in his meticulous 300-plus-page compilation of stories, stats, and incredible photos that made the A-K Region world famous. How many people know that New Kensington sent the first black quarterback to the NFL, that Vandergrift once had a professional baseball team, or Bell Township, a female high school football coach. How about the Pittsburgh industrialist who designed only one golf course in his life—the world-renowned Oakmont, or the fact that one Aspinwall High School football team went the entire season without giving up a point. “Nothing ever came easy. There were obstacles to overcome,” writes Guido, but overcome, they did. Take New Kensington’s legendary football coach Don Fletcher who led the Red Raiders to such success in the late ’40’s that the Ken-Hi team was invited to Florida to play in Miami’s Orange Bowl stadium. But when Ken-Hi was told it was welcome only if it left its two black players behind, the team voted to decline and the great Fletcher told the promoters what they could with their invitation. Then there was the Highlands High School basketball team that lost 41 games in a row during the early 1990s. Change came, however, when the district hired Saint Joseph High School coach Rich Falter and by 1995 the underdog Golden Rams shocked the WPIAL basketball world with a victory over the Blackhawks at Duquesne University.”In everything you do—be a giant.”These are the words of the football wonder that was Willie Thrower, whose story Guido writes with reverence and eloquence. And there are others in the book like Burrell graduate John Brown, whose touchdown on a 33-yard pass from Dan Marino gave Pitt a victory in the Sugar Bowl in 1982, making

In the world of golf, it is home to the famed Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, host to the second-ever U.S. Open and Amateur. Landmark courses like Garden City Golf Club and later the National Golf Links of America dot its landscape. The Lido Golf Club, considered at one time to be among the three greatest American courses, is also located in the same geographic region. It is Long Island, New York, home to America’s linklands. In all, more than 160 golf courses—private, public, and municipalities—dot this fascinating island detached from New York City. The island encompasses 1,198 square miles and is home to more than 2.7 million persons. All of its golf clubs draw on a singularly rich history in the sport of golf.Long Island has been home to the rich and famous during the boom times of the late 1800s, flourished through the Roaring Twenties and struggled to survive the Great Depression of the 1930s. The Vanderbilts, J.P. Morgan, and countless other business tycoons, have all played prominently in the development of golf on Long Island.Long Island is where legendary amateur Bobby Jones won his first major championship, the U.S. Open at Inwood in 1923; it is where the Walker Cup, the premier international amateur team match, drew its first breath; it is where many professional golfers plied their trade in days when they were treated as second-class citizens. After an absence of more than half a century, the U.S. Open came back to Long Island in 1986 at historic Shinnecock Hills and returned there nine years later in 1995. In June of 2002, the Open arrives for the very first time at one of America’s trusted public facilities—Bethpage State Park’s Black Course, owned by the state of New York. And, yes, it is located on Long Island. The Black, designed by renowned architect A.W. Tillinghast, will serve as a monumental test of the world’s best players.Stunning Bethpage Black photographs by acclaimed photographer Larry

Johnson’s Landing, on the north end of the island, was the site where mosquito fleet steamships could refuel and purchase lumber for delivery as far south as San Francisco. The first permanent settlers on the island arrived from Denmark in the early 1870s, with others of Scandinavian descent coming shortly thereafter. The southernmost island in Washington State’s Puget Sound, accessible only by boat or ferry from Steilacoom, Anderson Island boasts two freshwater lakes, two marinas, and a golf course. Bucolic Anderson Island received national press coverage in 2005 when the flower fairy anonymously left floral bouquets on doorsteps, a practice that continues to this day.

Covering 80 acres .32 km), it contains more than 600 species of plants, including more than 100 bromeliads, in cultivated gardens. Due to the hurricanes of 2005, the Arboretum is receiving a major restructuring that will lead to new collections arranged by geographical area. The new design also entails picnic tables, running trails, and a disc golf course. Established by President Trevor Colbourn in 1983, The Arboretum began with approximately 12 acres (49,000 m) of a disturbed pond pine community on the east side of the developed part of campus, east of the present biology building. In 1988, at President Altmans direction, the University expanded the Arboretum to include a 5-acre (20,000 m) Cypress dome, an oak hammock of about 3 acres (12,000 m), and about 15 acres (61,000 m) of sand pine and Florida scrub, connected to the original Arboretum by Sabal palmetto community and increasingly rare Florida longleaf pine flatwoods. During this time the director of the Arboretum was Dr. Henry O. Whittier. He would remain director of the Arboretum until his retirement 2003, when Dr. Whittier was replaced as director by Dr. Martin Quigley. In 2004, Hurricane Charley decimated the pond pine community on the original 12 acres (49,000 m) destroying most of the canopy. At forty-seven, David Wood sold everything he owned and set out to fulfill every golfer’s dream: For one year, he traveled the world (covering sixty thousand miles and every continent except Antarctica) by plane, boat, train, motorcycle, and rickshaw, to play the game he loves in the most exotic locales, including the world’s highest, driest, hottest, coldest, and most remote golf courses, and lived to tell the tale.Along the way, he met a bevy of fascinating characters, including surly cabbies, taxi drivers with a death wish, welcoming golf-course managers, threatening kangaroos, and golf pros out for a quick game. David faced dire situations, such as bouts of food poisoning in India and Egypt, altitude sickness in Argentina, getting booted out of the Ukraine by armed guards, and muddling about with limited language skills. But through it all he maintained a sense of humor and, of course, his passion for golf, which he played every chance he got.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Sir Arthur Fell (7 August 1850 – 29 December 1934) was an English solicitor and Conservative Party politician. After a notorious legal case in 1906 where a biased judge dismissed an election petition against him, Fell sat in the House of Commons from 1906 to 1922 for Great Yarmouth. He was noted as an opponent of free trade and as a persistent advocate of a Channel Tunnel. Fell lived in Wimbledon for many years, at Lauriston House on Wimbledon Common. He supported the preservation of the Common, and opposed efforts to build on the course of the Royal Wimbeldon Golf Course. In 1877 he married Annie, the daughter of Baron von Rosenberg of Dresden, and in 1900 he married Matilda Wortabet, daughter of John Wortabet MD from Edinburgh. Fell died suddenly on 29 December 1934, aged 84, in the Wimbledon branch of Barclays Bank. He was survived by his son and three daughters, and his grandson Sir Anthony Fell (1914-1998) was the MP for Great Yarmouth from 1951 to 1966.

$0.99

At the turn of the new millennium, the sports world is about to change forever. In two-and-a-half astonishing years, professional golf was reborn. With detailed coverage of the rise of David Duval, Sergio Garcia, and, of course, Tiger Woods, as well as the backbiting and chaos at the British Open, the backstage power struggles at the PGA, and the tragic death of Payne Stewart, At the Turn is a must-read for any fan. This is the true story of a game’s seemingly miraculous transformation — a no-holds-barred, reporter’s-eye view of pro golf, written by a true insider who rivals John Feinstein at his best.

Augusta and Aiken in Golf's Golden Age (Images of Sports Series)

Augusta and Aiken in Golf’s Golden Age (Images of Sports Series)

$21.99

The game of golf got its start in the Southeastern United States in 1892 on four holes with sand greens at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, South Carolina. Within five years, Palmetto had expanded to eighteen holes and the first nine-hole course in neighboring Augusta, Georgia was designed at the Hotel Bon Air. For half a century, the Augusta-Aiken area flourished as the winter destination of choice for the rich, famous, and powerful in America. Presidents Taft, Harding, and Eisenhower vacationed here. Baseball great Ty Cobb bought a home in Augusta’s quaint Summerville neighborhood. It was here that Bobby Jones began the improbable journey towards a Grand Slam, then built his dream golf course. By the turn of the century, winter tourism and grand resort hotels in the Augusta-Aiken area were well established. A favorable winter climate and easy rail access drew vacationers to Highland Park Hotel (1866), Willcox Hotel (1898), and Park in the Pines (1900) in Aiken; Hotel Bon Air (1890) and Partridge Inn (1913) in Augusta; and Hampton Terrace Hotel and Golf Club (1903) in North Augusta. Resorts in Florida and the growth of the air travel industry later coupled to mark the area’s decline in winter tourism, but not before Augusta-Aiken’s place in golf history was secure. In this unique volume, vintage images and accompanying text recall the unfo rgettable legends, the meticulously maintained courses, and all of the grandeur associated with the game.

This rollicking, ribald account is one insider’s view of the golf course management industry. Thrice betrothed and divorced, Steve Hunter is a jaded and battle-scarred veteran of the profession and subsequent matrimonial dissolution wars. His comedic portrayal of the inevitable collision between career responsibilities and common domestic expectations calls to question the worthiness of his occupation, golfers, his children, and the opposite sex as he strives to cope with all of them. “I think childbirth and parenting give you the same emotional effect as does holing out from the edge of the rough for a double eagle, only to learn you nutted that shot with someone else’s ball,” he opines.

Excerpt: Princess Lilian of Belgium (born Mary Lilian Baels, 28 November 1916) 7 June 2002) best known as Princess of Réthy, was the controversial second wife of King Leopold III of the Belgians. Mary Lilian Baels was born in London, England, where her parents were living at the time. She was one of the nine children of Henri Baels and his wife, Anne Marie de Visscher. Lilian was initially educated in English, but, upon her parents’ return to Belgium, she attended a school in Ostend, where she learned Dutch. She continued her studies in French in Brussels. She completed her education by attending a finishing school in London, the Holy Child. In addition to academic work, Lilian participated extensively in sports, such as skiing, swimming, golfing, and hunting. Above all, however, she enjoyed, as did her father, literature and the arts. At the age of 20, she was presented to King George V and Queen Mary of the United Kingdom at Buckingham Palace. (cf. Jean Cleeremans, Léopold III, sa famille, son peuple sous l’occupation) In 1933, Lilian saw her future husband, King Leopold III of the Belgians, then still Crown Prince of Belgium, for the first time during a military review. A few years later, when Governor Baels took his daughter to a public ceremony, she had the occasion to meet King Leopold, who presided at the event, for the second time. In 1937, Lilian and her mother met the King, now a widower, again on another ceremonial occasion. Soon afterwards, Leopold contacted Governor Baels to invite him and his daughter to join him in a golfing party the next day. Lilian also saw the King in 1939 at a garden-party organized in honor of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, and later at the golf course at Laeken, where she was invited to lunch by Queen Elisa… More:
